24 Hours for 2018

The 2018 24 HOURS Animation Contest for Students will take place on Friday October 5^th at 3pm PST to Saturday October 6^th at 4pm.

WHAT is it?:

For those that do not know, I have been running this international event for the past 16 years in which students around the world compete in teams of 5 to complete a 30 second animated film in just 24 Hours based on a given theme (by me). Believe it or not, with these tight constraints - many teams actually complete their films…in color!!! 

This has been such a successful event with the student’s attendance rapidly growing each year. In 2018, with over 183 teams (over 1,000 students) from 49 schools in 9 countries from around the world are participating in 24 HOURS this year!!! USA, Australia, Brazil, Canada, Mexico, Thailand and ...welcome our new international schools from the UK, Germany and Czech Republic! Game on!!!

THE THEME FOR 24 HOURS 2018

In the late 1500’s/Early 1600’s - Galileo Galilei spoke against the prevailing views of our solar system in the name of truth and science.

In the mid 1800’s - Harriet Tubman not only escaped from slavery but returned on many dangerous missions to help other slaves out to freedom.

In the late 1800’s - Helen Keller - Despite her condition of both deafness and blindness worked through her disabilities, learning to read and write, becoming a champion of social issues and helping to improve the welfare of deaf people.

In 1936 Jesse Owens won four gold medals at Hitler’s 1936 Olympics in Berlin. It was one of the great moments of sport, which helped to puncture the Nazi ideology of Aryan supremacy.

In 1955 Rosa Parks showed what ordinary people can do when she stayed on that bus sticking fast to her beliefs of defiance to racial segregation.

In the late 1970’s Harvey Milk was the most famous and most significantly open LGBT official ever elected in the United States against the backdrop of an anti-gay public.

In 2012 Malala Yousafzai a Pakistani schoolgirl defied threats of the Taliban to campaign for the
right to education.

And in 2018 Christine Blasey Ford bravely stood up to recount her sexual assault to the United States Senate Judiciary Committee against background of public mockery.

Each one of these people took an oppositional stance to the status quo. They were determined to be heard, willing to standing alone with the hopes we all could unite in the end. Though their fights were not always won, their voices were heard.

In 24 hours make a 30-second animated film depicting a strong point of view educating to your audience about the need to have empathy. Whether it be race, gender, lifestyle, social mobility, disability, geography, or even species, we all face challenges in making our reality be understood. Animate an experience that will help convey to the audience what it is really like to speak your truth.

Finished films will be judged by a panel of industry experts and prizes awarded to the top 5 teams.

WHY on earth would anyone participate in this crazy contest?:

This contest will teach our students much about working together, meeting deadlines and making creative decisions under pressure AND they all have a lot of fun and return for more each year – so it’s a proven model they really enjoy. This has been such a successful event and has grown every year. I plan to continue this annually and I hope you can join us.

24 Hours Animation Contest begins Oct 7th!

The 24 HOURS Animation Contest for Students is back and will take place on Friday October 6^th at 3pm PST to Saturday October 7^th at 4pm.

WHAT?:

For those that do not know, I have been running this international event for the past 15 years in which students around the world compete in teams of 5 to complete a 30 second animated film in just 24 Hours based on a given theme (by me). Believe it or not, with these tight constraints - many teams actually complete their films…in color!!!

HOW?:

Working from their home school all teams will start at the exact same time and submit a Youtube link to their films to aubry.mintz@csulb.edu before the deadline Saturday October 7^th at 4pm PST. Late submissions will NOT be accepted so teams will need to plan ahead and trouble shoot any issues INCLUDING UNSENT EMAILS AND YOUTUBE LINKS THAT DO NOT WORK!!!. Teams will need at least one faculty advisor (one from each school is fine) that will make sure the students have necessary equipment and space to do their work. 

REGISTRATION:

Each team must choose a TEAM CAPTAIN and choose a team name. Be sure the name is not offensive to others and is not similar to a registered team name (lists will be posted every few days on the 24 HOURS Facebook page): https://www.facebook.com/groups/24hourscontest/

This year's 24 hour animation contest began on Friday, Oct 7 and 135 short animated films of 30 seconds were created in the period of 24 hours. The theme was about "Walls" and was announced on Friday afternoon. All the teams had 24 hours to create an animated short based on the theme,

24 Hour Contest for 2016

The deadline for animation teams for this year's 24 Hour Animation contest has ended and this year's contest has 27 schools participating and 124 teams in competition. Woodbury University has 8 teams registered, twice as many as last year. That's 40 students ready to go!

24 HOURS 2016 THEME:

"There are four kinds of people in the world, Those who build walls. Those who protect walls. Those who breach walls. And those who tear down walls. Much of life is discovering who you are. Collins dictionary definition of Wall:

1. a vertical construction made of stone, brick, wood, etc, with a length and height much greater than its thickness, used to enclose, divide, or support
b. (as modifier) ⇒ wall hangings - Related adjective: mural

2. (often plural) a structure or rampart built to protect and surround a position or place for defensive purposes

3. anatomy any lining, membrane, or investing part that encloses or bounds a bodily cavity or structure ⇒ abdominal wall.

4. mountaineering a vertical or almost vertical smooth rock face

24 Hours has begun again!

Yes, it's true, the 24 Hours Animation Contest has begun! This is the 3rd year, Woodbury University will be competing in this event with 5 teams ready and willing to animate a 30 second short in 24 hours or less.Here's a link to last year's entries and winners!

The event began at 4pm on Friday, Oct 2nd with Aubry Mintz of CSULB welcoming all the 106 teams (530 students) from 22 schools in California,South Dakota, Texas, Missouri, Michigan, Ohio, Tennessee, Massachusetts, and my home state of Florida; as well as two countries, Canada and Australia in this year's contest.

He also thanked all the sponsors which include: CTN Animation Expo, DigiCel Flipbook, Focal Press, CSU's Summer Arts, Stuart Ng Books and Wacom. As well as ASIFA Hollywood and Animation Studios; Blue Sky, Dreamworks, Film Roman and Laika!

And then, the Theme to this year's 24Hours Animation Contest was announced!

Imagine if technology was introduced at the dawn of human kind.

30 second films can be in Past, present, future. 

Questions to consider:
What is the technology people found? How did people react to the technology? How did people evolve with this technology? What would today would look like?

Once the teams understood the theme, they began to brainstorm ideas to come up with a 30 second animation based on that theme.

And soon those ideas were formed into a rough storyboard timed out to fit into the 30 second format. Some teams were doing this process with their Cintiqs, while others used pencils,paper, scanners to input their drawings into the computer.

After a Pizza gathering at 9pm, the teams quickly returned to their projects ready for a long and productive night. 

This year, Drew's Clues and Fire Breathing Rubber Duckies were the freshmen teams who are both working tradigitally by animating on paper, scanning the drawings and finish animating in the computer. 

This was the first year a Stop Motion production was created and as the hours went from PM to early AM, the teams kept working. Some took turns sleeping as their team mates kept working. Some students stayed up all night without a break and soon wished they had when the sun began to rise. 

And as the morning grew brighter, several dozen donuts arrived for breakfast which were quickly consumed by the sleepless animation zombies. And as soon as they ate, back they went to their computer monitors to continue the work the had begun yesterday.

Occasionally after 3pm, you could hear a loud cheer as projects had been completed and downloaded to their youtube channel. The Night Owls were a mixture of 2 Freshman, 1 Sophomore and 2 Seniors, and the first to finish and submit their project.

Drew's Clues got their submission in at the last possible second, unfortunately they submitted without their soundtrack, but here it is with sound.

The Fire Breathing Rubber Ducks were the only team not able to finish their production before the deadline. Although, they did learn a lot from this experience, I hope to post their project soon.

All in all, everyone had a great time and did a lot of work in a short amount of time. I am proud of everyone who stepped up and made it happen. If you have any comments or suggestions for any of the teams, please let a comment below.
