Motion Control, before CG animation

Before the internet, before the cel phone, before cg animation, magazines roamed the land, full of articles to help educate the readers of a world long ago.

Ever wonder how the images from the ending of 2001: A space odyssey were created before Maya or Adobe?

Below is part of an article from American Cinematographer by John Whitney about the motion control slit scan technique.

Enjoy!

Working from Home

Here's a very interesting Zoom meeting of the Creators Society and the recent online lecture about working from home in animation. Click here to watch it.

As a third of the world's population goes into lock-down, "Work from Home" becomes the new normal for many. Not everyone can work, to their full capacity, from home but artists working in animation can largely do everything they need from home.

In 2019 most job adverts read as 'onsite' so many people don't know how to work effectively from home or how to setup a workflow for it. But for the coming months, and probably longer, we can expect to see 'remote' or 'WFH' as an increasingly common option.

We're gathering some of the most experienced artists and animated filmmakers for this panel to talk about the ups and downs of working from home. Tips and tricks for making the most of it and making it sustainable for artists and the companies that employ them.

How Animated Cartoons are Made!

I've collected a lot of magazine articles about animation over the years and have started to post them throughout this blog for others to enjoy.

I'm not sure where I found this one, but it was written by Fred C. Quimby, who was an animation executive producer on the original MGM Tom and Jerry series.

There you have it and now you know how it was done back then. I'll be scanning more articles of interest and posting them here. I've got tons of boxes of things which I need to preserve before I throw them away. Leave a comment below if you found this of interest!
